Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
